Spot On Products Are No Good
There's No Question That Spot On Products Are Harmful
Before You Dab, Research!
Before you apply any kind of Spot On product to your pet, take some time to read and investigate its ingredients. You need to do everything we can to mitigate their toxicity because, by definition, all Spot On products are poisons and therefore toxic.
Being completely familiar with the modality and degree of their toxicity is something you should know about before you find yourself desperately seeking information regarding how you, a family member or your pet is currently experiencing an adverse reaction to that Spot On product. Or, worse yet, how that Spot On product played a part in the permanent neurological harming or even death of a person or pet.
Laboratory Tested Doesn't Mean 100% Safe
Let's be frank about the situation. ALL Spot On products are laboratory tested. Every one of them is rigorously tested for immediate, near and long-term side effects. They must all meet a set of minimum safety requirements before they can be allowed into the consumer marketplace. To the naive, this is reassuring news. But what the innocent don't know is the trade-offs that are made to get these products on the shelf.
They Are NOT 100% Effective
Many people worry about insect-borne diseases. We understand. But what many people don't know is that no Spot On product is 100% effective against insect bites. Here's another thing they didn't tell you: Ticks usually need to be attached to the host for over 24 hours before they can effectively transmit disease. This means you have time - and plenty of it - to simply check your pet for ticks after you have gone outside. If you find a tick, remove it right away with a fork-type tick remover. Once the tick is gone, it would be a good idea to cleanse the wound with an appropriate product
There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch
No toxic product comes into being without a toll on life. Whether or not a compound gets released into the consumer marketplace is a question of a combination of cost/benefit and risk/reward calculations on the part of regulators, and intensive lobbying on the part of pharmaceutical companies. The result of this process is interesting: Often certain products hit the shelves in one country even as they are absolutely banned for sale in others because they are too harmful to people or the environment. A good example of this kind of trade-off is Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). It was a very popular insecticide in the USA until it was banned in 1972, because it was making bird eggshells too fragile. Still, many countries continue to use DDT to control malaria, by killing the mosquitoes that carry it.
When to Avoid Spot On Products
All Spot On products can have immediate, near and long-term side effects. If you bring them into your environment, you run the risk of negative, long-term impact on the health and happiness of you, your family and your pet. Spot On products are never safe for children to handle or be exposed to for extended periods of time. They are to be completely avoided if you, a family member or your pet has a compromised immune system. They are not recommended for puppies or kittens. If you don't believe us, read the label.
If You Must Use a Spot On Product
If you cannot avoid using a Spot On product, do consider stretching out the period between applications. For example, instead of applying it every 30 days, try a 60 or even 90 day interval. You will get practically the same protection with a lot less toxicity. You do not need to apply the product at all during winter.
